Each year, the Paperboard Packaging Alliance hosts a student design challenge to create and design a package for a specific prompt. In 2025, the prompt was to create a sustainable, recyclable packaging line of pet care products, PPA Pets. Two packages were needed this year: one needed to be a kit that was sent to a lab, like a DNA testing kit, and the other was up to students. Teams were responsible for ideating, branding, designing, and building their projects.

Our Solution
Our brand, The Playful Pals Association or PPA Pets, creates products for pet needs and wants. Their products target birds, cats, and dogs, but we decided to showcase two bird products: a DNA sexing kit and a build-your-own bird toy kit.
Behind the Design
We decided to target a younger, first-time bird owner audience with our products. This led to the bright coloring, fun imagery, and simple directions. The logo is a dynamic shape that can be flipped to depict different pets. For the packaging, the DNA kit has an accordion fold inside to hold the feathers, and the toy kit is shaped like a birdhouse with three containers for the materials.
